The shop at D B Workshop

It is a modest shop, but serves the purpose nicely. Inside, there is nearly 2000 sq. ft. of assembly area plus storage areas, a separate finishing room, office space and a small showroom. You will not find large production equipment here, but instead general purpose woodworking tools. The equipment philosophy is that tools must serve in a variety of roles, dependent on the current project at hand. This shop is geared to versatility and is capable of producing small-run designs that would be cost prohibitive in a shop using specialized equipment.

About Don Wilhelm:

I have a background in engineering, and my first career was as an Electrical Engineer for a large international corporation. When downsizing was young, I had sufficient service to be eligible for an early retirement package. I decided to take advantage of it and pursue woodworking, a special love for me since the time my grandfather tried to show me the correct way to saw a board.

I opened my first shop in 1991, and soon discovered that my initial plans to build Shaker furniture would take more marketing effort than I wanted to do - I wanted to build rather than market. Prospective clients began asking about designs that would provide what they both wanted and needed, and I finally found a market niche that I wanted to fill.

I began a study of classic architecture as well as both traditional and contemporary furniture designs so I would have the tools necessary to advise clients on style as well as structure.

I find a special joy in working with a client to determine just what will be suitable to that particular person. In that sense, my designs are not entirely my own, but are a creative work mutually achieved. Even with no formal design training, I believe I have developed sensitivity for good lines and proportions, and my clients seem to agree. Both artists and other woodworkers have remarked that what I am doing is more art than woodworking. In any case, I have found a niche to satisfy my creative desires and my need to work with my hands.
